Sitting next to another new friend, while they waited for their smoker to finish his cigarette, he'd glanced past her - and his eyes, normally a dark, deep brown - had flashed golden. Behind his glasses, one could almost be forgiven for mistaking it for a reflection... until it happened again. The sun hit his face, and his eyes flashed a brilliant golden brown.

The place was sparce enough - a damp doona cover hung over the banister to dry, the bed bare and waiting. Cups and glasses hastily gathered on a narrow shelf above a sink, a few dishes left in it. His laptop was hooked up to the TV, and was perched on some kind of bedside stand. The couch they'd been sitting on was pushed against the banister, room next to it enough to access the tiny bathroom. She hadn't seen inside the bathroom at all... she hadn't needed to use it. Which was lucky. Using strange bathrooms made her uncomfortable.

"The guide book! It's gone!"
"Are you sure you're checking the right hard drive?"
The creature peered over her shoulder.
"I... I guess it could be... but I copied everything onto Luci when I built her. Everything!"
She couldn't believe it. Everything else was still there... the re-written stories, the copies of old drawings, even the recovered sprites she'd managed to salvage after the last wipe. But the file for the guide book was gone. And not only that, but the other separate files that went into the guide book were gone. When she'd written it, she'd written each individual chapter as a separate file... and she'd backed it all up obsessively. She knew technology could be fickle... but this was a whole new level.
